Chinese delegation discusses Ghana's gold mining crackdown

ACCRA, Ghana, June 12 (UPI) -- The arrest of Chinese nationals in Ghana's crackdown on illegal gold mining has prompted China to send a team to the West African nation, officials said.

Representatives of Ghana's security and immigration departments are meeting with Chinese officials from the foreign affairs, commerce and public security ministries, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.

Thousands of Chinese have flocked to Ghana to dig for gold in recent years, inspired by stories of quick fortune.

Recently Ghana's government began a crackdown on illegal mining, arresting 169 Chinese workers.

Talks between the two governments resulted in their release.
