China's first aircraft carrier departs port for first time

QUINGDAO, China, June 11 (UPI) -- China's first aircraft carrier departed left its home port for the first time Tuesday to conduct training drills and scientific experiments, officials said.

The Liaoning had been anchored at the port in Quingdao since February. Military personnel had been conducting a series of tests and training drills, navy officials said.

The aircraft carrier was an unfinished Russian-made vessel that had been re-fitted and delivered to the Chinese navy in September, China's officials Xinhua news agency reported.
