BELFAST, Northern Ireland, June 7 (UPI) -- A 28-year-old man charged with an attempt to kill Northern Ireland police officers with a pipe bomb appeared in court Friday in Belfast.
Stuart Downes was ordered held without bail, the BBC reported. Downes was arrested June 1 in Shrewsbury in the English county of Shropshire.
Downes is charged with conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, The Guardian reported. Investigators said they believe the attack last month was linked to Oglaigh na hEireann, a dissident republican group.
Two improvised pipe bombs were thrown at police officers responding to an emergency call in North Belfast last month. Neither officer was injured.
A 27-year-old woman arrested after the attack has been charged with attempted murder. A 62-year-old woman was detained for questioning and released on bail.
