RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, June 6 (UPI) -- A Saudi Arabian judge has upheld a whipping sentence for a man who slapped his wife even after she said she wanted the case dropped, court officials said.

The man was sentenced to 30 lashes and 10 days in jail, and was also ordered to attend marriage counseling, Gulf News reported.

The court said the wife could witness the flogging as punishment for the physical pain the man caused her.

But on Wednesday, the wife went to the court and told the judge that she forgave her husband.

She said she wanted the case and the sentencing dropped, Gulf News said.

But the judge said he would allow the justice system to carry through with the punishment.

Court documents show the wife, who is in her 30s, filed the case after her husband slapped her during an argument.

The husband admitted to hitting his wife, the court said.
