Vietnamese police detain protesters

HANOI, Vietnam, June 2 (UPI) -- Protesters in Vietnam who were objecting to Chinese actions in the South China Sea Sunday said police shoved dozens of their peers into buses.

A group of more than 100 people gathered in Hanoi Sunday for the protest, Voice of America reported.

The demonstration came nearly a week after Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Chinese boats of colliding with fishing vessels near the disputed Paracel Islands, to which both countries lay claim.

The islands are believed to be rich in oil reserves.

Protesters wore T-shirts with a map of the islands on them and also waved posters that said "Shame on you China bully."

After a few minutes of the demonstration, police grabbed some of the main protesters, including a woman and her infant, and pushed them into nearby buses, Voice of America said.

The protesters claimed the buses were on their way to a detention center.
