Russian police arrest 21 in traditional end-of-month rallies

MOSCOW, June 1 (UPI) -- At least 14 people conducting an unsanctioned rally in Moscow have been detained by Russian police, officials say.

Another seven people were arrested at a parallel rally in the city of St. Petersburg, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Writer and opposition politician Eduard Limonov was among those arrested at the protest at Moscow's Triumfalnaya Square.

Russian opposition groups typically hold "Strategy-31" rallies on the last day of each month with 31 days, as demonstrations of their right to freedom of assembly, which is guaranteed in Article 31 of the Russian constitution.
