4.9-magnitude earthquake shakes Israeli resort town

JERUSALEM, June 1 (UPI) -- A 4.9-magnitude earthquake rattled the Israeli resort town of Eilat Saturday, but no injuries or damage were reported, witnesses said.

The Geophysical Institute of Israel confirmed a 10-second tremor had hit the city, located in the Southern Negev Desert, but could not confirm its magnitude, Ynetnews.com reported.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake was measured at 4.9, with the epicenter in the Sinai Peninsula.

Residents said the temblor hit at 2:52 p.m. local time.

A 4.3-magnitude struck Eilat in December 2012.
