Coscos' life sentences upheld in Spain

MILAN, Italy, May 30 (UPI) -- A Milan, Italy, appeals court has upheld four of six life-in-prison sentences in the first-degree murder of mafia witness Lea Garofalo.

Garofalo gave police details of crimes her mobster husband, Carlo Cosco, had committed. In revenge, Carlo and his brother, Vito Cosco, kidnapped and killed her in 2009.

The pair burned her body, which was never recovered.

Carlo Cosco's sentence of life imprisonment with one year in solitary confinement was upheld in the decision Wednesday, ANSA said.

Vito Cosco's similar sentence of life imprisonment with eight months in solitary confinement was also upheld.

Two others, Rosario Curcio and Massimo Sabatino, also had life sentences upheld.

But defendant Carmine Venturino's sentence was reduced to 25 years for cooperating with the prosecution.

A sixth man was acquitted, ANSA said.

Garofalo's daughter, Denise, is living under state protection after testifying against her father.

The court also approved compensation for the victim's family Wednesday, ANSA said, with $260,000 going to Denise and another $65,000 to the victim's mother and sister.
