Tourist throws boiling water at passerby

SAN BARTOLOME DE TIRAJANA, Canary Islands, May 28 (UPI) -- Police said a British tourist was detained after he poured boiling water on a passerby from the balcony of his 12th-story Canary Islands apartment.

A travel company initially attempted to stop the man without police assistance but called police after the man attempted to throw himself from the balcony, The Local.es said.

Police weren't able to open the door of the man's room and instead made their way onto a neighboring balcony.

The man, whose name wasn't released, threw boiling water at authorities while they attempted to calm him down.

Police later broke through panels between the rooms and detained the man.

Authorities said they found pots of boiling water on the stove and the bathtub was also filled with hot water.

Police took the man to a psychiatric unit at the island's hospital.
