Toubou ethnic leader disappeared in Libya

SEBHA, Libya, May 28 (UPI) -- Members of the Toubou ethnic group in Libya protested after one of their leaders went missing in Tripoli, demanding the government find him.

Alashei Mahdi, the commander of the Qatrun's Martyrs Brigade, disappeared Sunday evening from the Al-Ukhuwah Hotel in Sebha where he was staying, the Libya Herald reported Monday.

He had met with two men dressed in civilian clothes and went off with them in a Toyota Hilux, the newspaper said.

Since then, no one has heard from him and his mobile phone was switched off.

"No one knows where he is," said Toubou spokesman Yusuf Isa. "We've contacted the [Supreme Security Committee]. They say they don't know what's happened to him."

Mahdi and his brigade were responsible for manning border checkpoints around Murzuk, the Herald said.

Toubou demonstrators called on the government to take action, and find and free Mahdi. They said they planned to send a delegation of representatives to meet with the government on the incident.
