Muslim inmates take Brit prison guard hostage

YORKSHIRE, England, May 28 (UPI) -- British counter-terrorism officials said they are investigating an incident where three Muslim prison inmates took a guard hostage and injured another.

The incident, which took place Sunday at Full Sutton prison in Yorkshire, England, is not believed to be connected to the nation's most recent terror attack, when two black men attacked and hacked to death Lee Rigby, a British soldier walking on the street. Still, counter-terrorism officials are investigating Sunday's incident to see if Rigby's killing was in any way a motivation for the more recent incident.

The Guardian said none of the three inmates -- whose identities were not released -- are being held on terror-related charges.

A male prison guard was taken hostage and beaten by the inmates. When a female guard attempted to intervene she was slashed on the arm, prison officials said. The male guard was held for several hours until a special tactical team interceded and freed the captive guard. He suffered a broken cheekbone and other injuries during the assault, said Michael Spurr, chief executive of the National Offender Management Service.
