May 28, 2013 at 1:01 PM

BAGHDAD, May 28 (UPI) -- Eight people died Tuesday in Iraq in the latest of a series of violent sectarian incidents that have left dozens dead and more than 200 injured, officials said.

Seven people were killed and 34 people were injured in eastern Baghdad when a car bomb exploded in Sadr City, CNN reported.

In Mosul, an intelligence officer for Nineveh province was killed in a drive-by shooting, police said.

On Monday, at least 57 people were killed and 190 wounded in attacks in several cities, including Baghdad, authorities said.

Discord between Sunni and Shiite sects of Islam has manifested in increased violence across Iraq in recent weeks.
