DA NANG, Vietnam, May 27 (UPI) -- A Vietnamese blogger, a retired journalist, was arrested on charges of "abusing democratic freedoms," the Public Security Ministry said.

Investigators said Truong Duy Nhat, 49, was known in the Vietnamese blogosphere for his postings on the blog Mot Goc Nhin Khac," or Another Point of View, which has been blocked since he was detained Sunday, Thanhniennews.com reported.

Nhat was arrested at his home in Da Nang and charged with "abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon the interests of the State, the legitimate rights and interests of organizations and/or citizens," investigators said.

His blogs provided an alternative perspective that frequently sparked heated debate, reported Thanhniennews.com.

Before starting his online commentary, Nhat was a journalist with the newspapers Cong an Quang Nam Da Nang, or Quang Nam Da Nang Police, and the Dai Doan Ket, or Great Solidarity.
