Park to seek closer cooperation with China over N. Korea

SEOUL, May 27 (UPI) -- South Korean President Park Geun-hye said Monday she will seek China's cooperation to resolve North Korean issues during her Beijing trip next month.

The visit in late June will be Park's first summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"On the occasion of next month's visit to China, I will work more closely with China in order to resolve North Korea issues," Yonhap News Agency quoted Park as saying. "I will try to get North Korea to become a responsible member of the international community and come forward for dialogue without fail."

North Korea last week indicated a willingness for talks when Vice Marshal Choe Ryong Hae visited Beijing as a special envoy of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. On that trip, Choe also met with the Chinese president.

Yonhap said Choe's trip was seen as an effort to mend relations with China, the North's closest ally. Their relations have been strained after the North's long-range rocket launch in December and a nuclear test in February.

The report said South Korea, however, remains skeptical about the North's willingness for meaningful discussions based on its past actions.
