Man charged with sexual assault on girl in 1991

TORONTO, May 25 (UPI) -- A Canadian man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl in Toronto more than 20 years ago.

Shane Daniel Garry, 45, of Brampton, Ontario, was identified as a suspect by DNA, the Toronto Star reported. He was arrested Thursday morning.

Toronto Police Detective Ali Ansari said the victim was playing in the lobby of her apartment building with her sister when a man approached them and asked them to help him find a restaurant. He drove them around before leaving the 5-year-old girl in a store.

The older girl was sexually assaulted and then left at a fast-food restaurant. Ansari said the victims, now adults, are "surprised and happy" a suspect has finally been identified.

"In 1991, the DNA technology was not where it is now; in fact, it was nonexistent. With the advent of new technology we're able to solve these cold cases many, many years later," he said.

Police have also released photos of Garry as he looks now and from 1990 and 1993 because they fear he may have assaulted others.
