Nearly 100 sickened by tainted pastry at Russian shop

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, May 24 (UPI) -- Ninety-six people have made sick from eating tainted pastry at a bakery in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, authorities said Friday.

Nineteen of the sick are children, and four people have been hospitalized in serious condition, ITAR-Tass reported.

Laboratory testing has confirmed 46 of the people, ages 2 to 78, were sickened by salmonellosis, a spokesman for a local consumer rights protection authority said.

Eighty-five people were still hospitalized Friday, and the rest were receiving outpatient treatment, the spokesman said.

A court in Kopeisk has suspended the bakery that produced the tainted goods from operating for 90 days.

As much as 150 pounds of baked goods were removed from the shop after an outbreak of salmonellosis in Chelyabinsk and Kopeisk May 18 and 19 was tracked to the bakery's production facility in Kopeisk.
