VATICAN CITY, May 21 (UPI) -- Authorities Tuesday tried to convince a restaurateur to leave the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City where he is protesting European Union policies.

Marcello Di Finizio of Trieste said he wants the Italian government to help defend his restaurant from what he says are European policies that threaten his business, ANSA reported.

Vatican guards and police watched the man as he risked his life to descend to a window ledge to hang a banner reading, "Stop the massacre, no to the euro."

Di Finizio staged similar demonstrations July 30 and Oct. 2 to protest, among other things, former Prime Minister Mario Monti's government and austerity cuts, ANSA said.
