EDMONTON, Alberta, May 20 (UPI) -- A stunt driver involved in an accident that killed a spectator at a Canadian event issued an apology, saying he wished he "could take that poor girl's place."
The victim, 20, was struck by a Jeep as it drove over the protruding wheels of another vehicle at a Saturday charity event organized by Alberta JK Owners, an off-roading Jeep enthusiasts group, in Edmonton, Alberta, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
"I have never been so terrified in my life and I am soooooooooo sorry," the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman wrote on a website for the Jeep drivers' group.
"I know there will be a ton of hatred and speculation regarding what happened and I accept that. But please understand that I would never go out of my way to hurt anybody or deliberately inflict any kind of pain, especially to the off-road communities that have become my family," the driver said.
"My head's really not in a good place right now. I wish I could take that that poor girl's place so badly."
The driver's identity was not reported.
A candlelight vigil was held for the victim Saturday night at the site of the event.
Edmonton police said they were investigating to determine whether charges would be filed.
