ORDZHONIKIDZEVSKAYA, Russia, May 17 (UPI) -- A suicide bomber killed himself and injured a police officer Friday in the in the Russian North Caucasus region of Ingushetia, officials said.

The suspected Islamist militant "blew himself up near the Interior Ministry offices at about 7:10 a.m. Moscow time, in the village of Ordzhonikidzevskaya in Ingushetia's Sunzhensky district," the Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted a law enforcement spokesman as saying.

An Islamist insurgency, formerly confined to the adjacent republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years, with attacks on security and police reported regularly in neighboring republics of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria.
