Explosions at Pakistani mosques kill 15

BAZ DERA, Pakistan, May 17 (UPI) -- Bombs at two mosques in the Malakand area of Pakistan exploded after Friday prayers, killing 15 and injuring 100, a government official confirmed.

"The explosive was a timed device planted apparently among the pillows and sheets of worshippers inside the mosque," Amjad Ali, the deputy commissioner of Malakand, said of one of the blasts.

The explosions shook the Bar Kalley and Jamia Masjid mosques in the village of Baz Dera in northwest Pakistan, the Pakistani website Dawn.com reported.

Militant groups backing insurgents across the border in Afghanistan have had a strong presence in Pakistan, and frequent attacks by groups including the Pakistani Taliban have been a part of the country's recent national elections, CNN noted.
