$1 million jewelry heist at Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, France, May 17 (UPI) -- Jewelry valued at over $1 million, to be worn by celebrities on the red carpet, was stolen from a Cannes, France, hotel room, police said.

The jewels were stolen from a safe in the hotel room of an employee of the Swiss jeweler Chopard, a sponsor of the annual Cannes Film Festival. They were contained in a security box, which was smashed and broken, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Friday.

The jewelry was to be loaned and worn by celebrities during the festival, which begins Wednesday, CNN said.
