Three allegedly planned U.S., French embassy attacks in Egypt

CAIRO, May 16 (UPI) -- Three suspected al-Qaida terrorists in Egypt planned to use car bombs in attacks on the U.S. and French embassies in Cairo, investigators said.

Investigators said Mohamed Abdel-Halim Saleh, Mostafa Ibrahim Bayoumy and Amr Mohamed Eiqedah were recently extradited to Egypt from Algeria and Iran after they escaped from jail during Egypt's 2011 uprising, Ahram Online reported Wednesday.

The three allegedly confessed to having been in contact with al-Qaida but denied any terrorist attack plans, the website said.

Investigators said Eiqedah and Saleh had been in communication with the Madinet Nasr terrorist cell, the official Egyptian news agency MENA reported.

The three allegedly used certain websites to coordinate with al-Qaida and other jihadist movements in Syria, Iran, Iraq and Morocco, investigators said.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Supreme State Security Prosecution arrested Mohamed Abu el-Ela for allegedly being a member of a terrorist cell linked to al-Qaida, Ahram Online reported.

He allegedly helped terrorist leader Dawood el-Asady organize a terror cell in the Sinai Peninsula.
