May 16, 2013 at 1:45 PM

WESTERLAND, Germany, May 16 (UPI) -- Celebrity chef Miki Nozawa was killed in Germany during a heated argument with two customers who refused to pay their bill, officials said.

The incident started at Nozawa's restaurant on the German island of Sylt, Suddeutsche Zeitung reported.

Two customers complained that their meals were unsatisfactory and left the restaurant without paying.

Nozawa ran into the customers at a bar. A fight ensued and the customers beat Nozawa.

The chef was brought to a hospital where he later died from injuries sustained during the beating.

Nozawa is known for his Japanese-Italian fusion cuisine and has cooked for Mikhail Gorbachev, Phil Collins and Denzel Washington.

The suspects are still at large, the newspaper said.
