Swedish parents jailed for daughter's exorcism

May 14, 2013 at 11:23 AM

BORAS, Sweden, May 14 (UPI) -- Parents who tried to exorcise demons from their daughter by beating her and making her drink urine have been sentenced to prison by a court in Sweden.

After finding the pair guilty of child abuse, a Swedish appeals court handed sentences of 27 months in jail to the girl's father and 30 months in jail to her stepmother, the Swedish news agency TT reported Tuesday.

The girl, who was only 9 years old at the time of the exorcisms in 2007 and 2008, provided authorities with details of the abuse.

She said in addition to beatings, she was forced to drink a mixture of her own urine and cleaning fluid until she vomited.

A pastor who aided in the exorcisms in the southern town of Boras was also convicted in the case but his sentence was not immediately available. A second priest was cleared of all charges.
