MATERA, Italy, May 14 (UPI) -- Police in southern Italy say they've placed a 40-year-old man under house arrest for severely biting his ex-wife and her new boyfriend.

The attack took place on a street in a small village near the town of Matera, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Tuesday.

Police said the suspect "trampled his wife, bit her arms and permanently disfigured her face."

He allegedly bit off part of the man's ear after attacking the couple with an iron bar.

Police said the woman has previously reported her ex-husband for domestic violence but he did not have a criminal record.
