Manitoba community hit by ice wall cleans up

OCHRE BEACH, Manitoba, May 13 (UPI) -- A cleanup was under way in Ochre Beach, Manitoba, Monday where wind-fueled waves sent a wall of lake ice onto shoreline homes and cottages, officials said.

Thirteen cottages were destroyed, and 27 others damaged Friday by ice pushed ashore by waves generated by winds of up to 90 kilometers (55 miles) per hour, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

Ochre Beach is about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of Winnipeg.

Homeowners assessed damage to their property, and looked at ice piled in driveways and on roofs, the CBC noted.

Stan Struthers, member of the legislative assembly for the nearby city of Dauphin, visited Ochre Beach Saturday and said it was "a little early right now to say what kind of" emergency aid would be available, "but right now we have to sort through the kind of mess that's here."

"This is worse than a flood," homeowner Elaine Davis said. "With a flood the water just goes through and it's finished. With this, there's still so much ice out on the lake that, if the wind picks up, it could start all over."
