OTTAWA, May 13 (UPI) -- A convicted terrorist was deported from Canada, 26 years after he arrived, a government minister in Ottawa announced Monday.
Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, at a Parliament Hill press conference, said Mahmoud Mohammad Issa Mohammad was being deported to Lebanon after illegally entering Canada in 1987.
Mohammad was convicted by a Greek court of "manslaughter by negligence" in a 1968 terrorist attack on an El Al Airlines airplane in Athens in which one man was killed. He was pardoned by Greece in 1970 and had his sentence commuted, then was granted permanent residency, with his family, in Canada in 1987, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
An Immigration Department investigation found he did not disclose his conviction on his application, which would have made him inadmissible to Canada, the CBC said.
"This case is almost a comedy of errors," Kenney said. "[Mohammad] lied about his identity, he lied about not having a criminal past, he lied about not having ties to terrorist organizations."
