BEIJING, May 13 (UPI) -- Nine children drowned in two weekend incidents in China, state officials said.

Five fifth-graders were playing along a river in Kinyang City in central China's Henan province Sunday when they fell in the water. One child was rescued but the four others drowned, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

On Saturday, five middle school students in southern China's Guandong province drowned when one child fell into the water and four others jumped in trying to help, authorities said.
