[VIDEO] Ice wall damages or destroys 27 homes on Canadian lake shore

DAUPHIN, Manitoba, May 12 (UPI) -- Strong winds pushed up a wall of ice up to 30 feet high onto the shore of Canada's Lake Dauphin, damaging or destroying 27 homes, officials say.

The destruction occurred Friday night in the rural enclave of Ochre Beach, about 12 1/2 miles east of Dauphin, Manitoba, and 185 miles northwest of Winnipeg, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Winds gusting up to 50 mph created wave action that heaved the ice onto the lake's south shore, destroying 13 homes and damaging 14 others. Some of the residences were crushed and others were shoved off their foundations.

With insurance not expected to pay for the property damage, homeowners are hoping for government disaster aid. The damage prompted officials to declare a local state of emergency, the CBC said.

No injuries were reported.

Myles Haverluck said he was barbecuing when he heard a roaring sound and saw the wave of ice coming.

"By the time we went around the front the cabin, next door was moving 10 feet off its foundation," he told CBC News.

"Then we heard these cracks, and we went inside the house and the ice had come through the windows of the kitchen and living room."

Another resident, Andrew Barnet, the ice "just kept coming."

"It felt like it was hailing because the wind was throwing the ice everywhere. It was kind of nuts," he said.
