Police in Jakarta raid two nightclubs, arrest 19 for drug use

May 11, 2013 at 3:32 PM

JAKARTA, May 11 (UPI) -- Police in Jakarta said they arrested 19 people Saturday at two nightclubs in the city for allegedly using drugs.

Safari Parto Diharjo, head of the Jakarta Narcotics Agency's prevention division, said the nightclub raids in the capital of Indonesia, a city of 10.1 million people, went smoothly. Officers requested permission from security at the clubs to shut off the music, turn up the lights and randomly test club patrons for drug use, the Jakarta Globe reported.

He said officers targeted those sweating profusely or dancing erratically.

"[They used anything from] hashish, crystal methamphetamine, amphetamine, ecstasy and heroin," Safari said. "It's extraordinary. It means that there is a heroin trafficking syndicate here."

The agency arrested 13 men and four women and one club and two people at a second bar. No drugs were found in the clubs. Diharjo said officers were investigating whether any of those arrested are actual drug dealers or just users.
