BELAYA KALITVA, Russia, May 9 (UPI) -- A freight train with 50 tankers carrying fuel derailed Thursday in southern Russia, setting off a huge fire that left one person missing and 27 injured.

The derailment occurred at around 2 a.m. at the Belaya Kalitva station in the Rostov region, Russia Today reported. About 2,700 people were evacuated from the area around the station.

Evgeny Boevets, a spokesman for the North Caucasian railroad, said propane from one of the tankers spread to the locomotive and fueled the fire.

The local emergencies ministry representative said 27 people were treated for burns and other injuries and 11 were seriously enough hurt to be admitted, including one in critical condition. The engineer was among the injured.

The fire was reported to be contained by about 6 a.m. local time as 190 firefighters with 48 pieces of equipment battled the flames.
