CHATHAM, England, May 9 (UPI) -- A man wanted in New York on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping was found in England, working at a grocery store, officials said.

Sean Lopes, 47, was arrested Monday in Chatham, where he had been working in a supermarket since he fled the United States, NBC News reported.

Lopes was "wanted on charges of attempted murder and kidnapping in the United States" involving a 22-year-old woman dating June 2004, Kent Police said.

The U.S. Embassy in England said it is believed that Lopes fled the United States using his brother's travel documents.

In England, he took a job working for a Sainsbury's grocery store.

"We can confirm that a member of staff from our Pepper Hill store was arrested on Monday," a Sainsbury's spokeswoman said. "We are helping the police with their investigations but are unable to comment further."

Lopes, a Guyana native, had been listed on the New York Police Departments 10 most-wanted suspects list.

He was being detained in London until extradition proceedings got under way, police said.
