Cyclonic storms kill seven in India

AGARTALA, India, May 9 (UPI) -- Cyclonic storms, lightning, rain and landslides, responsible for killing seven people, wreaked havoc for a fifth day Thursday in India, officials said.

The Met Office in Agartala said the storms would continue for the next two days in Tripura state.

A large landslide in western Tripura killed at least two people Wednesday night.

"Sixty-year-old Ramani Debbarma and her 17-year-old-son Utpal died when huge landslides buried their home at Simna in western Tripura Wednesday night," a government official said. "A team of officials and workers under supervision of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dhiraj Debbarma were still on the job to clear the huge mudslide and to recover the bodies."

Meanwhile, two women in northern Tripura died when the storm uprooted trees and electrical poles, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.

Monday night, Parendra Debbarma, 55, died in western Tripura when a wall in his house collapsed, the news service said.

"Thousands of trees, telephone and electric poles were uprooted, badly affecting electricity supply, telecommunication services, and movement of vehicles," the official said.

Information about the two other deaths was not reported.

At least 20 people have been injured since the storm began Sunday, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.
