American University of Sharjah mosque imam stabbed; suspect captured

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates, May 8 (UPI) -- Police arrested a man in the stabbing of the imam of the mosque at American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, Gulf News reported Wednesday.

Police captured the suspect, a Palestinian-Canadian, as he tried to flee by car after he allegedly stabbed imam Diaa al-Swaidan, Gulf News said.

The imam was listed in a stable condition at a Sharjah hospital.

Students said the university was on lockdown for several hours while police searched for the university alumnus.

Police said they were trying to determine a motive for the stabbing.
