Bangladesh death toll reaches 600

DHAKA, Bangladesh, May 5 (UPI) -- The death toll from the Bangladesh building collapse has now reached 610 as searchers clear rubble away from the site, officials said.

About 490 of those bodies have been handed over to the victims' families.

Rescuers said that many more bodies are rotting under the rubble, and they fear that many of them are decomposing quickly, bdnews24.com said.

Authorities said that more than 2,400 people have been rescued from the wreckage since the building collapsed April 24 in Savar, a suburb of Dhaka.

The building is located in the Rana Plaza and it held five garment factories and thousands of workers.

The leader of the opposition party, Khaleda Zia, has blamed the government for concealing the exact number of people killed, bdnews24.com said.

The army, which is leading the rescue operations, as well as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have denied the allegation.
