Russia's Pacific coast shaken by 5.5 magnitude quake

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, May 4 (UPI) -- A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook the Pacific coast south of the Russian city of Kamchatka, seismologists said.

The Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said the epicenter of the temblor was located about 48 miles off the Paratunka spa, ITAR-Tass reported Friday.

The quake was located 95 miles beneath the earth's surface. No damage or casualties were reported.

The area of the quake is known for its pools of water heated by volcanic activity. Kamchatka lies along the so-called ring of fire around the perimeter of the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes frequently occur.
