MAUREGARD, France, May 4 (UPI) -- A French village buried a Cameroonian man who was found dead in the landing gear of an airplane that landed at a local airport, officials said.
The man, who has not been identified, was found three weeks ago on a CamAir plane arriving in Paris from Yaounde, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.
He had apparently stowed away on the flight and died from a lack of oxygen when the plane was more than 29,000 feet above ground.
The village of Mauregard, which has 350 residents and is situated next to Paris' Charles De Gaulle airport, paid for a simple funeral this week that was attended by the mayor, two council officials and a cemetery worker.
The village paid for a headstone for the man that reads "Unknown except to God."
"He's entitled to a minimum of dignity," said Mayor Marion Blancard.
Local police told the Le Monde newspaper there are one or two cases a year of stowaways dying by the time they reach the Charles De Gaulle airport. Such deaths are recorded in Mauregard.
