BROCKENHURST, England, April 27 (UPI) -- An ambulance driver and an elderly patient were killed when the ambulance hit a tree in the New Forest in southern England, police said.
Police arrested the driver of another car, a 25-year-old man, charging him with careless driving that caused death, The Daily Telegraph reported.
The crash occurred Friday in the New Forest, an area of woodland and open heath southwest of Southampton set aside by William the Conqueror as royal hunting preserve.
Graham Lloyd, secretary of the New Forest Golf Club near the crash scene, said the ambulance left the road on a long straight section.
"There are no bends near the scene, so it is difficult to see how somebody could leave the carriageway unless they had to swerve to avoid something," he said. "The weather has been perfectly clear all morning, with good visibility."
The ambulance driver, described by a spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service as someone who has served the community for years, was killed with the elderly man she was transporting to a hospital.
Another paramedic and a relative of the patient were injured.
