Abbas: Talks to begin on Palestinian unity government

RAMALLAH, West Bank, April 27 (UPI) -- Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas urged cooperation Saturday as he announced the beginning of talks on forming a unity government.

The authority has been split since 2007, when Hamas took control of Gaza. That left Fatah, Abbas' political party, in effective control of the West Bank.

Abbas said he plans to keep to the timetable agreed to in February at a meeting of Palestinian leaders in Cairo, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
