April 21, 2013 at 4:16 PM

TORONTO, April 21 (UPI) -- A man and woman were wounded Sunday during a Toronto bank robbery when the man stood up to the robbers and they shot him, police said.

The heist happened at a TD Canada Trust bank branch around 12:30 p.m. Witnesses told The (Toronto) Globe and Mail the male victim refused robbers' orders to get on the ground. One witness described the man as "the bravest guy I've ever seen."

After the robbers got their hands on the cash, the male victim charged after them into the parking lot, where he was shot in the stomach. Police offered no update on his wounds, or how or when the woman was injured in the incident.

Media reports indicated the robbers fled the scene in a stolen green Honda and left behind several dollar bills that had been stained with dye meant to track the stolen cash.
