Spanish foreign minister meets with Abbas

April 20, 2013 at 6:54 PM

AMMAN, Jordan, April 20 (UPI) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo visited Jordan and met Saturday with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Garcia-Margallo is on a four-day trip to the Middle East, The Jerusalem Post reported. He is scheduled to be in Israel for meetings Tuesday with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, President Shimon Peres and Tzipi Livni, the justice minister and leader of negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

The foreign minister told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo he promised Abbas to do everything in his power to get Israel to freeze settlement building on the West Bank and free Palestinian prisoners.

"Spain will make every necessary effort to ensure the viability of a two-state solution," he told the newspaper.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who recently visited the region, said the window for a two-state settlement is rapidly closing.
