Al-Jazeera snags Morsi interview

CAIRO, April 20 (UPI) -- Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is to tape an interview with al-Jazeera, his first interview since appearing on state television in January, a spokesman said.

The interview, set to air Saturday evening, was intended to address cabinet issues, including opposition demands Morsi dump Prime Minister Hisham Qandil, Ahram Online reported.

Citing a source in Morsi's government, the report said Morsi was expected to discuss Egypt's request for a loan from the International Monetary Fund and Egypt's relations with the United States, Palestine, Syria and African nations -- as well as the conflict between Morsi and Egypt's judiciary.

The Muslim Brotherhood, to which Morsi has strong ties, held a rally Friday demanding a "pure of all [Hosni] Mubarak-era figures from the judicial authority."

The television interview was being taped Saturday afternoon at the al-Qubba Presidential Palace in Cairo.

Morsi spokesman Omar Amer said Thursday the interview was to have been carried live Saturday. Morsi has not given a live interview since taking office in June 2011.
