There will be about 72,000 polling stations in the country for the May 11 general elections, and the election commission, using past incidents of election-related violence in the various polling areas, found more than 21,000 of the polling stations would be sensitive, the report said.
Of those, 10,273 stations were declared highly sensitive.
Election commission sources told Dawn officials fear the number of the sensitive stations was likely to go up after the recent incidents of violence at party rallies.
Dawn said Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari met Thursday with Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin Ebrahim to discuss security for election candidates.
