Earthquakes hit Miyake Island, Japan, no damage reported

TOKYO, April 17 (UPI) -- Japan's Miyake Island was struck Wednesday by at least a dozen earthquakes, the strongest a 6.2 magnitude quake, the Japan Meteorological Society said.

A volcanic island 112 miles (180 kilometers) south of Tokyo, the island's first quake Wednesday afternoon was the strongest. There was no report of a tsunami possibility, or of damage or casualties, the Japan Daily Press said.

The Oi nuclear power plant, currently Japan's only online nuclear reactor, is in the vicinity of the island, the newspaper said, but its operator, Kansai Electric, said there was no damage to its facility by the earthquake.
