Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban who claimed responsibility for the attack, said four Afghan police officers were killed and six others were wounded and abducted.

Darzab District Gov. Rahmatullah Hashar said only two police officers survived the attack.

Officials said observers recognized Taliban commander Mawlavi Hekmatullah as part of the group attacking the check post.

Hekmatullah was released from prison four months ago after tribal elders brokered talked with the Afghan government, Khaama Press said. The reason for his imprisonment was not reported.
