Lawyers to seek wider investigation of Costa Concordia shipwreck

GROSSETO, Italy, April 13 (UPI) -- Lawyers representing passengers of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia say they plan to ask Italian prosecutors to expand an investigation of the disaster.

The attorneys will be present at a preliminary hearing in the Tuscan town of Grosseto in the trial of Francesco Schettino, the captain of the Costa Concordia when it hit a rock and capsized in January 2012, Italy's ANSA news agency reported Friday.

Thirty-two people died in the wreck.

Cesare Bulgheroni, a lawyer from Milan, said the group of attorneys wants prosecutors to "extend their investigation into the companies to verify if there was any collusion with those that are currently indicted."

The attorneys will file a formal complaint Monday with the intention of bringing a suit against the board of the cruise ship and directors of parent company Carnival Corp.
