KABUL, Afghanistan, April 12 (UPI) -- At least 13 Afghan soldiers were reported dead and nine abducted in battles Friday with Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan, authorities said.

Local officials said the fighting began early Friday in the Nari district of Kunar province when militants attacked a security checkpoint, Khaama Press reported.

More than 100 militants battled Afghan forces for more than 5 hours, said Gen. Zahir Azimi, a spokesman for the Afghan defense ministry.

Taliban fighters held the remote outpost briefly before reinforcements managed to regain control, the BBC reported.

Kunar province, which borders Pakistan, is a frequent battleground for the Taliban.
