Administrators at Dicle University in Diyarbakir said the campus will remain closed until Monday, Today's Zaman reported. The decision was made Wednesday after a fracas that injured at least seven students, one of them seriously.
The fighting began when the Wise Youth Club, a student organization believed to be affiliated with Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Muslim group, tried to hand out fliers for a religious event. The Dicle University Student Association, which is believed to have ties to the Peace and Democracy Party and the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK, ordered Wise Youth to stop, saying the action was not authorized.
Tensions escalated over the next few days. Police Tuesday blocked a student association march on a Wise Youth meeting. An independent parliamentary deputy was hit with a water bottle when she tried to intervene, and Wise Youth members stoned a bus carrying other students away from the scene.
