Indian girl jailed after reporting rape

NEW DELHI, April 10 (UPI) -- Police officers in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have been disciplined for jailing a 10-year-old girl after she reported a rape, officials say.

The Supreme Court in New Delhi asked the state government Wednesday for an explanation of the police actions, Gulf News reported. The girl's mother was also put in a cell at a police station Sunday.

The mother and daughter were freed after a freelance photographer filmed them and showed the footage to senior police officers.

The parents, who live in Meerpur, a village outside Rewari, said they found their daughter unconscious in a field Sunday after she was raped. They immediately went to police.

Police officials originally said the reaction to the report was because of "confusion." They have now suspended two female constables and transferred the head of the police station and another sub-inspector.

A neighbor, described as a 24-year-old gang leader, has been arrested, police said.
