KABUL, Afghanistan, April 9 (UPI) -- Two coalition service members were killed Tuesday in a helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan, the International Security Assistance Force said.

The cause of the crash was being investigated but initial reports indicated there was no enemy activity in the area when the crash occurred, the ISAF said in a release.

Local authorities in eastern Nangarhar province said the helicopter crashed in Pechigram district, Khaama Press reported.

The official said Afghan police forces were dispatched to the scene.

Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the crash, saying the chopper was shot down by Taliban fighters, Khaama Press said.

ISAF by policy defers casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.
